Q to Q employee Ken Starr, with his dog Barnacle, gives vast numbers of rides every week to the many customers from Queensborough and the New West Quay.

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC — Ever since the introduction of the Quay to Queensborough Ferry in New Westminster on May 18th, 2018, the small transportation company has grown to new heights, helping citizens with a quicker form of transit.

Having a vast number of scheduled sailings, in the span of ten minutes customers can cross from the vibrant New Westminster Quay to the relaxed neighbourhood of Port Royal on the island of Queensborough.

The company, which has a total of twelve employees from across the Lower Mainland, recently unveiled their new winter schedule introducing later sailings on Fridays and Saturdays, leaving many customers more satisfied with the service than before.

“I take the ferry every morning and every afternoon, now that the ferry is operating for longer hours it’s even better”, says 20-year-old customer Alex Lazecki, “It hasn’t just helped me, it’s benefitted many people living in Queensborough”.

With their current two-year trial set to expire next May, the city and the company are aiming towards signing a five-year deal with TransLink, but their only set back right now is the size of their operation. Ken Starr, one of the head employees, believes the best is yet to come with a major increase in customers this summer.

“The summer months are always the busiest months of the year in the boating world”, said Starr, “But overall in 2019, we have noticed a steady increase month by month in our daily commuters”.

Originally, the city planned to build a pedestrian bridge that would be shared the two neighbourhoods but ended up deciding on a two-month test of the ferry operation and later extended the project for a further two years.
