Do we treat the data properly?

If we ask any modern company, especially startups, which is the most precious asset they have, immediately after the collaborators of the organization (although not the answer of all organizations, human talent is the most precious asset of a company) we find data, and we all refer to data as modern oil, but I wonder, do we really treat them as we say they are worth?.

I’m going to ask you a question and I want you to be very honest, do you have a routine in any of your systems that erases or updates any data that is not previously saved?, the answer is most likely yes, in the databases we generally update the state of the system and lose the data from the previous state, but nothing happens right?, is just one of the most precious assets of the company.

This is what I think needs to be done before deleting or modifying any data, as it is one of the most important assets of the company we need to review the company’s strategy in the short, medium and long term, make it sure that it cannot have any impact on any of the derivative projects to meet these strategies, then interview all managers see strategies for the different areas and whether the deleted or updated data can influence any of the projects or goals to be met for each of the areas, finally join the general manager, CEO, president or whatever is called the maximum leader of the organization, to approve or reject this action or take it to the shareholder meeting if necessary. I believe that this is the responsible thing to do after disposing the most important asset of the company.

As we all know, the above will not happen, because not only our time and that of the entire organization can focus much better on other tasks, if not because storage is very cheap, of the order of a penny dollar for gigabyte. On the other hand, it is also extremely difficult to predict the future, and an unstored data may be key to a strategy of the future that was not considered at the time.
