Theme introduction

Project management has various certifications. These are provided by different providers such as the Project Management Institute (PMI), Axelos, International Project Management Association (IPMA), International Association of Project Managers (IAPM), Scrum Alliance, and Global Association for Quality Management to mention but a few. There are multiple factors that come into play which influence which project management certifications one takes. This theme seeks to find out how the professionals came to know of the project management certifications they have taken as well as the benefits of such.

PM CONVERSATIONS: Unpacking, with Lesotho project management professionals

In conversation with Mr.Lehlohonolo Makoti

We asked Makoti on why a project management professional should seek certifications and the lessons learned from the certifications process. He had this to share.

“ I am a Data Governance Program Lead at the Commonwealth Secretariat, my key responsibility is to oversee the enhancement of good data management practices across various departments. My knowledge about the PRINCE2 certification came through colleagues and industry workshops, leading me to achieve the PRINCE2 Foundation certification successfully. This journey has profoundly expanded my understanding of project management.

I’ve learned about the crucial role of strategic alignment, effective communication, and risk management in project delivery. It has also emphasised the importance of adapting methodologies to specific environments, a lesson directly applicable to the diverse data governance scenarios in our organisation. This expanded knowledge continues to shape my approach to data governance, enhancing my overall effectiveness in the role.”

Makoti has previously written on the importance of industry certifications on his blog. “ Times have changed and some employers/clients prefer skills over the paper, but wouldn’t just having both be at your advantage? It definitely will, because it’s great to say you have a skillset, but actually proving through the right credentials added to your portfolio or résumé/cv beats just being vocal about your skills. To wrap up: get certified and prove that you are indeed the master of your craft. “ Read the rest of the blogpost, Why Get Certified?.
