Find Your Fire

by C.J. Adams

Ever since announcing Flight & Feather last week, I really haven’t had a moment to sit down and write. Actually, that’s a lie….I just haven’t really made myself write anything on Medium. I’ve been writing plenty elsewhere, like this article over at The Hustle.

Anyway, on my long run on Friday, I was listening to a podcast interview with Laird Hamilton. If you don’t know who Laird is, head on over to The Google…it’s your friend.

He said something that hit me hard:

We’re all born with a fire inside of us and mine never got extinguished.

Wow. How about that one?

Laird hit the nail on the head. Every single one of us is born with a fire inside of us. At our core, we are all adventurers, risk takers, and just bit crazy, but at some point in our lives, 99% of us have that element put out. For some it’s when we’re children. For others, it’s in college. For some, you might be able to retain that fire well into your 20's only to have it extinguished by external forces saying you need to settle down.

If you’re one of the lucky ones, like Laird, who not only never had that fire extinguished but actually had that flame fanned, cheers to you. You can be an inspiration to 99% of the population.

For everyone else, let the guys like Laird, like me (yes, I just myself in a group with Laird Hamilton….it feels a bit odd), like Luke Tyburski inspire you and prove to you that you can live life your way.

You can surf that wave.

You can start that business.

You can marry that girl.

You can travel.

You can be an adventurer.

That flame is still in you. It never fully goes out. Fan the flame a little bit until, eventually, it becomes a bonfire and share that with everyone around you.

If this article made you smile, think, or dance around like you just don’t care, it would mean the world to me if you hit the RECOMMEND button!
