Is Maintenance Required for a Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump/AC?
As ductless mini-split air conditioning/heat pump systems become increasingly popular, the question arises — Do they require maintenance? As with any other appliance, there are a few things a homeowner should do on a regular basis.
Indoor Filters — The filters catch dirt, dust and anything else in the air before it’s blown back out into your room. Fujitsu, the maker of Halcyon ductless systems, advises cleaning the filters once every two weeks with a vacuum or by washing with a neutral household detergent and warm water.
If these filters become clogged they will restrict air flow, and your unit will struggle to get a room to temperature.
Intake Grille — The intake grille is easily removable for a quick wipe down with warm water on a soft cloth. It should be wiped dry before being latched back into place. When “dusting” off the outside of the unit, never use water hotter than 108°. Wipe the unit gently using a soft cloth. Never use a scouring cleanser.
Outdoor Unit — Clear snow, grass and leaves away from outdoor condenser unit. If the outdoor unit does not have clear air flow, it is forced to work harder than necessary to produce the right amount of heating or cooling. Homeowners should never spray their outdoor units with a pressure washer or high-pressure hose. This can cause damage to the outdoor coil.
An annual deep cleaning of the outdoor and indoor coils should be performed by a professional. With special equipment and solvents, a heat pump company will be able to remove any build-up of dirt or grime. Think of this as what an annual furnace cleaning would be. It ensures your unit is in tip-top shape and ready for the next cooling or heating season.
