A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against the website of Brian Krebs highlights how insecure the Internet of Things is. Brian Krebs, a cyber-security reporter, was on the receiving end after he exposed and led to the arrest of two proprietors of an online attack-for-hire service.

Distributed denial-of-service attacks entail overloading websites and other internet connected systems with traffic and then making them crash. DDoS attacks use insecure internet connected computers to to build a botnet and participate in the attack.

The massive Krebs attack exposed the use of new tactics by cybercriminals. It was new due to the enormous scale and the devices recruited for the attack. CCTV cameras, home routers, digital video recorders and other embedded computers — the Internet of Things — were used for the attack rather than traditional computers. …

One of Google’s self-driving cars has been involved in a collision at a red light. The autonomous Lexus SUV was involved in the worst recorded accident of a self-driving car yet.

The autonomous Lexus SUV was hit by a driver who ran a red light at the intersection of El Camino Rea and Phyllis Ave in Mountain View, California. The Lexus SUV was passing through a green light when the collision occurred.

ALPHA, an artificial intelligence developed by a doctoral graduate of the University of Cincinnati has beaten retired United States Air Force Colonel Gene Lee who tried his skills against ALPHA’s superior algorithms.

ALPHA also defeated all other AI’s available at the Air Force Research Lab and any other volunteer human experts. The contests were in a high fidelity air combat simulator.

The most notable aspect was that ALPHA achieved all of its superiority running on a Raspberry Pi.

The feat of defeating Lee was no mean achievement. Gene Lee, an instructor, is experienced in aerial combat having trained with numerous U.S. Air Force pilots. The answer is yes, however, the role of machine learning and AI will be more about assisting Doctors and augmenting their knowledge rather than replace them completely.
