Lots of people here shooting this article down with some form of ‘no facts here/look at the examples of socialism/socialism kills people’…
Your examples are not socialism. It doesn’t really matter whether Nazi Germany, East Germany, North Korea or China have decided to call themselves. If you care about facts, look at the actual policies of those regimes. There are socialist elements (in many cases alongside more prominent capitalist elements), but those elements are almost always subservient to a blatantly fascist or otherwise authoritarian ruling force.
All those crying ‘socialism has never worked!’, and denigrating the author in the most patronising way - educate yourselves! It’s not socialists who need educating. The kind of post-capitalist socialism we need now is a kind that has never existed before, and people such as the author and I know that it has to be compassionate, positive and innovative.
It’s nice and easy to condescend by saying that you’re older, that this system works fine and that socialism isn’t worth exploration because of past (not-really-socialist) examples. What’s hard is what’s right — actually giving a toss and supporting alternatives. If you aren’t doing that, you’re part of the problem.
Great article, Holly.
