When you learn to orient yourself to yourself, and not the world around you, then you’ll know how to resist. This comes only through practice: walk through your house in the middle of the night with your eyes closed and the lights off — see how many times it takes before you stop completely bumping into stuff. Take up an exercise or hobby that measures your progress only against yourself, such as Crossfit or martial arts or yoga. Or run a marathon that loops twice around a city; when the professional runners pass you, you’ll understand profoundly that it can’t possible be a race, only a completion, and only you can do that. Practice, re-orient yourself in the world back to yourself, and those rankings will never matter again. This was a lovely article, by the way — your writing is lyrical and true. Very much appreciated!
