Review of Poetry Collection by Lee Woodman

Artwork, some classic and some new, evoked in words. I wish the book could have included pictures of the art. But the list of works is clear and exact, so you can find most of them online.

Some of my favorite lines:

“… moths in the drapes, cockroaches
in the corner, truth exhaling
from the rotten flesh of women
under those bloomers.”
(after Delacroix’s Women of Algiers in Thir Apartment)

“He’s laughing, he’s sobbing.
Fantasy and gravity counter-balance.
My two heads, two hearts weep with love and contradtion.”
(after Chagall’s Paris through the Window)

“We implore
a third downrush
to bring us
to our senses,
uncover our best selves.”
(after Tacita Desari’s The Montafon Letter)

“… Bacchanalia, ode to joy,
mock abduction, or trance — these figures keep orbiting,
convinced they can save each other wrapped in dance.”
(after Mattie’s Dance)

List of Richard’s other stories, essays, poems, and jokes.
