Gould’s Book of Fish

Review of novel by Richard Flanagan

I just got back from a month in Australia, including a week in Tasmania, so this novel, set in Tasmania immediately resonated with me. It is sheer nonsense, but nonsense that is at times delightful. The narrative frame sets up distortions of history and of the fabric of reality that are both shocking and entertaining. At times, this novel reminded me of the imaginative flights of Tristram Shandy (which I now must read again).
