Some people feel inclined to shift from one bed or sofa to another in the middle of the night. I suspect that different mattresses are more compatible with different stages of sleep — e.g., the difference between deep sleep and dreaming or REM sleep.

Mattress companies now sell adjustable mattresses such that two people can set their separate sides to their preferred firmness. It would make sense for them to make such mattresses programmable, so users could choose to change the setting at pre-set times or to have the bed sense changes in sleep mode and adjust accordingly.
