Review of the classic text of taoism by Lao Tzu
A line in poem #80 was revelatory for me.
“instead of writing,
they might go back to using knotted cords.”
That called to mind an important stage in the development of written language.
Before alphabets, before writing of any kind, there were mnemonics, which can be personal aids for remembering rather than shared means of communication.
