Review of novel by Jean Rhys
Antoinette, the main character, who gradually sinks into insanity, is intriguing. But the parallels to Jane Eyre don’t work for me. The self-absorbed emotionless husband of Antoinette does not feel like Mr. Rochester, nor is it credible that she becomes the crazy lady in the attic. If part three were deleted and the story were given a new conclusion, unrelated to Jane Eyre, this might have become an excellent novel.
