I respect your opinion but I can‘t excuse his public exploitation of the personal tragedy of others. Please understand that I shared similar disgust for the two recent articles Caitlin Johnstone penned on Sen. McCain. Her form of gonzo journalism is intriguing but wishing death on McCain crossed my red line.
My mother has a bound collection of James Baldwin’s essays from the 60’s that she cherishes. She participated in a couple of civil rights marches held in Charlotte and Greensboro, NC in 1964 and keeps the polaroids in the fold of the book. She loved JFK and said that his assassination in 1963 motivated her to become more politically active. I read a few of the Baldwin essays that my Mom has but I was young and can’t remember much except that one was very critical of Beecher’s, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” because of the way it portrayed white slave owners. I read Walker’s “The Color Purple” in college and I will confess that it was one of the few books that I have shed tears while reading.
