It also has various displays showcasing historical items, photographs, equipment, boat models, and a collection of Gulf of Mexico shells. In the museum, you can also find a study library comprising diaries, books, magazines, plans, ship logs, documents, correspondence, and historical information on nautical issues.
VILLAGE OF THE ARTS
The Village of the Arts, located in the heart of Sarasota-Bradenton, is a vibrant artists community spanning 36 acres, with over 100 houses, restaurants, cafés, art galleries, studios, and workshops. It is home to numerous artists who live and work in beautifully renovated cottages from the 1920s and 1930s.
The homes have been meticulously restored and painted in brilliant hues, adding to the village’s already artsy vibe. The artists-in-residence create works shown and sold in one of the village’s numerous art galleries. DE SOTO NATIONAL MEMORIAL
The De Soto National Memorial honors Hernando de Soto’s landing in 1539 and the Europeans’ subsequent discovery of what is now the southern part of the United States. The memorial is set over 25 acres of stunning terrain where the Manatee River runs out into Tampa Bay, including 3,000 feet of beachfront, and is located in Manatee County, 5 miles west of Bradenton. Kayaking, canoeing, picnicking, camping, fishing, birdwatching, and nature and hiking paths are all available at the De Soto National Memorial.
THE JUDAH P. BENJAMIN CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL
The Judah P. Benjamin Confederate Memorial is a Florida State Park in Ellenton known as the Gamble Plantation or the Gamble Mansion. The Gamble Plantation Historic State Park, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is home to the Florida Division United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and has several attractions.
Major Robert Gamble erected a lovely antebellum mansion, the carefully preserved wooden-framed Victorian-style Patten House, for George Patten in 1872, and 16 acres of the former sugarcane plantation, which formerly encompassed 3,500 acres. The park also houses the Confederate Veterans Memorial Monument, which was built in 1937. A visitors center with a plethora of information on the area is available.
EMERSON POINT PRESERVE
Emerson Point Preserve is a 365-acre preserve located near Snead Island in western Palmetto near the mouth of the Manatee River. It offers spectacular examples of Florida’s wildlife and native plant groups, as well as various ancient and historical relics.
The Native American Portavant Temple Mound, a historical monument, can be found in Emerson Point Preserve. Other attractions include the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, a welcome/ranger station with visitor information, and an observation tower with outstanding views of Terra Ceia Bay. There are various multi-use routes for hiking, mountain biking, and jogging, as well as two small picnic shelters, a large ten-table picnic shelter, and a canoe/kayak launch.
