Never Enough: My Favorite Scene from “The Greatest Showman”

The Greatest Showman is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long while, and this scene is what makes it special for me. A lot of the emotions and sensations that people feel at different stages of their lives packed into one scene.

Here is a list of all the emotional events I picked out in the scene.

1. The audience are in awe of Rebecca Ferguson’s (the singer) grace and poise. They can’t seem to comprehend how so much soul can be packed into one song and one person. It feels like all the audience were thinking ‘If I die now, I’d say I lived life to the full.’

2. Rebecca Ferguson is proving a point — to herself, her audience, and more importantly to Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman). She’s telling him — I love you, I want you, and all this — the fame and fortune — will never be enough without you.’

3. Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman) is feeling relief and pride. His gamble seems to be paying off. He’s cementing his status as the Greatest Showman. He’s mesmerized by Rebecca Ferguson and her sheer talent but somehow oblivious of the hurt he’s causing his wife who is sitting right there in the audience [typical men].

4. Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman’s wife) sees her marriage and the love of her life slipping out of her hands at that moment. She clasps her fingers today as if to hold tight and hold on to whatever is left. She’s feeling fear, anxiety, despair, loss, pity, and probably anger.

5. Zendaya and Zac Efron (the hand-holding couple) went through many stages of a relationship in the space of a few seconds. Falling in love (again) and reconciliation, parental disapproval (family drama), fear, heartbreak, and regret — all in the space of a few seconds.

6. The kids (The Greatest Showman’s children) highlight the innocence of childhood and youth. They’re simply enjoying the moment unaware of all the strings being pulled and strained around them. I want to be like the kids.

What a movie and scene!

That said, I simply love the song and the movie. I have this song on my playlist and I get weird looks from other drivers every time I’m blasting it in my car.
