There was a time when car air conditioning used to be considered a luxury, but not anymore. With the rise in global temperatures brought on by global warming, car air conditioning has now become more of a necessity. Few issues cause grief to drivers as much as unreliable air conditioning during the hot summer months. A malfunctioning AC system can result in an extremely stressful drive.

If you are concerned that your AC may not be functioning efficiently, read on to learn the symptoms of a faulty air conditioning system.

Four Symptoms Of A Faulty Air Conditioning System

1. Warm, weak airflow from the vents

While seated in your car and with the air conditioning turned on, place your hand in front of the vent to gauge the temperature of the air flowing out. The first issue you need to note is the time it takes for the air to become cold. Once you sense cold air blowing out of the vent, note the volume of air being blown out. If the airflow from the vent is chill but barely trickling out, you could have a faulty duct problem. On the other hand, if it takes over 5 to 10 minutes for the air to get cold, you could be facing an AC refrigerant leak. In either case, taking your car to a car service center and getting its air conditioning system checked out is best.

2. Air that smells foul

If there is a foul smell in your car cabin when the air conditioning is turned on you could be dealing with a problem of bacteria growing in your air conditioning vents and AC evaporator. A musty smell often indicates fungal growth. The dark, warm, and damp environments of your car’s AC system provide the perfect conditions for fungal growth. Attempting to cover up the foul smell with an air freshener is not a good idea. Your best option would be to drive to your car workshop and fix your air conditioning system. Breathing in bacteria or fungal spores can be extremely harmful to your health.

3. Unusual sounds emanating from the air conditioning system

The air conditioning system in your car generally functions without any noise. If you hear any squealing, buzzing, or clicking sounds when your AC is turned on it could suggest a host of problems with your air conditioning. A squealing sound suggests a problem with the serpentine belt; a buzzing often points to an overcharged system; clicking sounds could be caused by loose mounting bolts. You can get all these aspects checked at a reliable car service center.

4. Leakage in the compressor hose

Leakage in the compressor hose is difficult to detect since it deals with components under the hood. Of course, the technician at your car workshop can easily spot this problem. If you know how to go about it you can check the hose running up from your compressor for any discharge. If there is a discharge it could be refrigerant oil which would hamper the effectiveness of your AC.

If you observe any of the signs mentioned above, do not delay in getting your AC system checked by an expert mechanic or technician. Failing to quickly resolve the problem will lead to a further deterioration in your car’s AC system, causing permanent irreparable damage to it.
