If you’re spending your vacation in Bermuda, you’ll no doubt be paying a visit to the City of Hamilton. In addition to being the capital of Bermuda, it’s also a unique cultural hub where you’ll find Bermudians from all walks of life engaged in the activities that give our island a personality all its own. Today, Newstead Belmont Hills would like to tell you all about Hamilton, the city that has “assembled the scattered” on our island (as stated in the city’s motto), giving it the diverse character that’s loved by locals and tourists alike.

The History of Hamilton, Bermuda

Bermuda’s capital city is named for former Governor Sir Henry Hamilton, who served as a British Officer during the Revolutionary War. During Hamilton’s term as Governor, the capital was located in St. George’s, although he felt moving it to a more central location would serve to unify the entire island (hence the city’s motto). To this end, a 145-acre plot of land in the center of the island was set aside and officially incorporated in 1793. Unfortunately, Hamilton would not live to see his dream become a reality; it would be nearly two more decades before his namesake city would become Bermuda’s official capital in 1815. As the seat of Bermuda’s government, Hamilton grew at a rapid pace, housing government buildings, military garrisons, cathedrals, offices, and more. Today, it’s the booming center of tourism and commerce on the island.

Tourism in Hamilton

As a tourist destination, Bermuda is one of the finest islands in the world and visitors will definitely want to spend some time in Hamilton. Front Street is the unofficial center of activity in town where you can find plenty of bars and restaurants featuring local flavors and cuisines from all around the world. After you’re done eating, be sure to visit some of the local shops where you can find anything you’re looking for, from gifts and souvenirs to clothing and jewelry. When the sun goes down, Hamilton’s night life kicks into full gear, especially during the summer, when large numbers of cruise ships descend upon the city’s ports.

Of course, there’s more to do in Hamilton than just shop and eat. If you’re looking to learn about Bermuda’s history and culture, make a stop at the Visitor’s Information Center for a map of the city’s many attractions you can reach by foot. A few highlights you won’t want to miss include the Bermuda Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, the Bermuda Historical Society Museum (housed in the same building as the Bermuda National Library), Fort Hamilton, and the City Market.
