Jordan, just to clarify, there were many Latinos (potentially Spanish-speakers) that voted in favor of Proposition 227. There are many possible reasons for this: 1) their children were not enrolled in a quality bilingual education program so their children were not doing well academically (remember, not all bilingual education programs are the same and they are not all implemented the same; we have learned a lot since then), 2) they internalized the “English-only is better” ideology by way of the media or through folks they knew, etc. The list goes on. So my point is that inevitably, there were Spanish-English bilingual folks that voted for Prop 227. In fact, my experiences with Latino families in schools tells me that unless they are informed on the research and issue at hand (just like anyone), they might just vote against Prop 58.
