London R&B artist Ella Mai recently talked about the backstory behind her song “Boo’d Up.” She was having really bad anxiety one day. She took out her notebook and started writing. “I was going through beats,” she says. “And my life was all over the place.”

She wanted to tell a boy how she felt about him, but she couldn’t. The only way she was able to express her feelings was through music. That’s when she wrote the line, “Feelings, so deep in my feelings.” After that first line, the song basically wrote itself because of how she felt about that boy.

She knew right away that it would be a special song, not just for her but for everyone who feels deeply about someone.
