Batumi Boulevard
Batumi Boulevard is a charming seaside park that has been a labor of love since its conception in 1881. Back then, the Governor of Batumi District, Mekalov, had a grand vision to create a seaside park in Batumi Old Town. He enlisted the help of German gardeners and landscape architects, Rayer and Reseller, and the project began.
Unfortunately, Reseller passed away just two years into the project. This led to the involvement of Michael D’alfons, a French architect, designer, and nobleman. Between 1885 and 1889, D’alfons worked his magic, transforming the area into a beautiful haven of rest, all while maintaining a charming French style.
D’alfons wasn’t just an architect; he was a passionate gardener who recognized the unique potential of Batumi’s Black Sea coast. His work laid the foundation for horticulture in Batumi, and his use of the fertile soil was nothing short of genius. His impact was so profound that he is often hailed as the “Genius of Batumi sea coast”.
In 2012, a bronze statue of D’alfons was erected in the boulevard, a testament to his significant contributions to the development of the boulevard and the Batumi Botanical Garden.
After D’alfons, Iason Gordeziani, a decorator and gardener, continued the evolution of Batumi Boulevard. Under his leadership, the boulevard saw significant improvements, including modernizing vegetation and creating new nurseries. As a tribute to his work, a statue of Gordeziani was unveiled in the boulevard in 2012.
In 2009, Spanish architect Alberto Domingo Cabo added a modern touch to the boulevard, extending it by 1200 meters and making it even more appealing to visitors. This expansion resulted in a 7 km long coastal line, divided into the ‘new’ and ‘old’ boulevards.
Batumi Boulevard is more than just a park; it’s a cultural heritage monument, a unique recreation zone filled with restaurants, beach bars, cafes, clubs, amusement rides for kids, and even a zoo corner with over 140 delightful creatures. The boulevard is also home to over 40,000 tree-plants and several iconic architectural landmarks.
From the mesmerizing Dancing Fountains to the historic Batumi’s Lighthouse, the innovative Alphabetic Tower, the elegant Batumi Colonnades, and the moving sculptures of Ali and Nino, there is something for everyone. Also, don’t forget to check out the Summer Theater, a striking wooden structure built without a single nail, and the Cafe Fantasy Octopus, a unique example of preserved mosaic art in the city.
