Gratitude.

I have so much to be grateful for, yet I often find myself dissatisfied and discontent.

I know that this is not an unfamiliar feeling for most people, but perhaps that itself is a bit unsettling. Many of us SHOULD feel grateful. Even the very expression of gratitude has been shown to improve health and well-being. Yet our default position is often NOT gratitude, but the opposite: we complain, we envy, and we are thoroughly unsatisfied.

But I suppose many things that we SHOULD feel or do are often not the default position. This is where habit comes in. Like going to the gym, you have to make gratitude a habit. This is an area of my life that needs much improving. I have to ingrain into myself the habit of thinking, feeling, and expressing gratitude. And then over time, eventually (hopefully) I will be able to make gratitude my default position.

Feeling like I deserve more, feeling like I don’t have enough — this cannot be my default position.
