As the greatest scorer in hockey history celebrates his 57th birthday, it’s almost a requirement to talk/type about how amazing Wayne Gretzky was as a player. When you win as many Art Ross, Conn Smythe, and Hart Memorial Trophies as Gretzky did, you’re bound to have a crop of highlights to underline those awards. Then tack on the dozens of scoring records he owns, only adds to his legacy.

So in honor of The Great One’s birthday, I decided to pick my five favorite Gretzky moments. Enjoy!

Gretzky scores his 50th goal of the 1981–82 season

In his first two seasons in the NHL, Gretzky had tallied 51 and 55 goals respectively. It shushed critics who doubted the Oilers forward could score with the same kind of fervor he played in the final seasons of the WHA.
