Google Code-in 2015 — it was cool
My name is Seva and I’m participating in Google contest for pre-univercity students from 13 to 17 years old. Students from different countries are working on open source projects from 14 orgatizations.
I heard about GCI from really cool blog “Every day matters” and I’m very happy that I didn’t miss contest in this year.
The first problem of student on Google Code-in — it’s how to choose organization, because Google recommends choose only one. When I first time visited “Tasks” page, I choosed random task and it was task from Fossasia.

After complementing task I decided to work with Fossasia and I’ve had reasons: my mentor have helped with my work very fast and I have enjoyed working with he. Also I’ve liked a project: “Loklak” — peer to peer tweet storage.
And I haven’t did a mistake: the Fossasia is great organization. Mentors are friendly and have big knowledge.
It was very interesting to build different projects and learn new technologies. I have built:
- Telegram bot for searching tweets with Loklak: https://github.com/sevazhidkov/tweets-search-bot/
- Loklak Tweet Heatmap: https://github.com/fossasia/fossasia-loklak-tweetheatmap
- List of Loklak apps: http://loklak.org/apps/applist/
- Loklak search: http://loklak.org/apps/zhidkovseva/
- Documentation for Loklak server asset API
- Search tweets about last movies: https://github.com/sevazhidkov/movie-tweets
And many another things. It was really cool.
Now I love Open Source. I understand how it important for developer community. May be not in GCI, but I will be open source contributor. Forever.
