Perhaps it is better to ‘reformat’ the car to get the best out of new technology instead of expecting that new technology will make the car cope with present day traffic. Apple’s former CEO Steve Jobs felt about the smartphone the same way: reformat the mobile phone. Why shouldn’t this apply to the car? Three solid reasons why UBER and Waymo are on the wrong track:

  1. Energy- and Space Efficiency, and therefore the whole ‘Climate Change thing’ too. Not to mention the economy aspect.

2. Self-driving SUV takes way too much space. A sleek vehicle is better suited to perform autonomously. It will be able to sneak through dense city traffic where a SUV (like the Volvo XC90, see below, that UBER is using) gets stuck. The person behind the steering wheel of the sleek vehicle will be able to intervene more alertly when the ‘auto-pilot’ fails.

3. And for what?

Below: don’t think ‘car’… think ‘smart-mobility device’
