Did you talk with grad students about their daily lives before starting the program?

For sure — that’s definitely an important part of deciding whether a specific grad school might be a good fit! The problem is that the financial ramifications of grad school are often not yet evident to students still in the program.

I think the academic community in general has become more aware of the tough job market after grad school in recent years (especially the adjunct struggle, for those who want to stay in academia), so maybe this will change. But the effect of lost years of wage growth and retirement savings is still not a topic of conversation.
