Sewing Machine Selfie
Take a quick selfie of your sewing machine and its set up, so that you can refer back to it if you run into trouble and see how it was set up.
Trust the Thread Guide
Always make sure to leave your thread guide in the up position, and make this one a habit. If you don’t the needle will unthread once you begin.
Start Out By Hand
On your first 1–2 stitches you should turn your hand wheel for your guide counter clockwise. This will allow you to check the needle for smooth operation into the fabric. This will help you make a precise and accurate starting point for your first stitch.
Keep It Low
Don’t ever stop your machine with your needle in the up position that is removed from your fabric while you are sewing a corner piece of your project. If you leave your needle in the down position the needle will pivot in that location and make your turn a lot easier.
When Things Are Messed Up — Re-thread
Anytime your machine is acting up and creating loose stitches, is skipping stitches, or any other abnormality like that then you can assume that it is time to rethread the machine. Save yourself some time, and just rethread.
Check Your Needles
There are different types of needles for difference threads and fabrics that you must use accordingly. Check your needle and your stash of needles for quality and if you have the right size for what you are doing.
Matching Threads
Always make sure that you are using the same thread types on all your spools of thread in both your bobbin and spool. Using different colors is ok as long as you maintain the same type otherwise you are going to run into a lot of problems.
Clean Your Baby Up
A sewing machine expert needs routine cleaning maintenance just like any other high performance machine that we use. Make sure to get rid of the dust bunnies, lint, left over fabric, old threads, and anything else that might be obstructing its operation.
Following these tips is crucial to anyone who is serious about sewing. We know that you may be a beginner but you can still start to acquire these skills right away, which will build you a great foundation for your incredible career ahead!
