My husband has heard of shock waves to treat erectile dysfunction. Is it good treatment and what are the risks, asks Hélène, 62.

Erectile Dysfunction

Shock waves are a relatively new treatment prescribed for male erectile dysfunction and it has been shown to be effective in this area. These waves are already used in other fields , for the arteries of the heart, for certain ulcers which heal difficultly, for the treatment of bedsores, or even for treating tendons.

WHO ARE SHOCKWAVES FOR?

They are not suitable for all cases. A man who, for example, has erection failures due to stress would not benefit from this treatment. Ditto for a man with low testosterone . Indeed, these shock waves act only on the arteries. They act neither on the emotions, nor on the nerves, nor on the hormones. This is why they are indicated in men suffering from erectile dysfunction and whose sexual arteries are damaged: those who smoke, have diabetes, high blood pressure or who are at risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also recommended for men who no longer respond to erection medication or who experience side effects with these treatments.

HOW’S IT GOING ?

The device used delivers shock waves which strike the penile tissue , causing activating stimulation of cell repair. This treatment thus makes it possible to produce new capillary vessels, which improves the circulation in the erectile bodies of the penis.

Several sessions are necessary, between 4 and 12 depending on the case. It is from three sessions that the patient can observe a change. The sessions are spaced from a few days to a week, the protocol being adapted to each person. The treatment is simple and painless. Just undress, lie down and the doctor applies the device to the underside of the penis and its roots, presses on a pedal and shock waves are delivered. The patient hears a noise (shock) and feels like vibrations. The session lasts about 20 minutes because the doctor moves the device to treat all areas of the erectile body .

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SHOCK WAVES

In my opinion, shock waves should probably be used afterwards to prevent erectile dysfunction from the age of 50 in men who want their erection. Because the sexual arteries necessarily get damaged over the years. It seems to me that using these shock waves early would improve circulation in the penis, which would undoubtedly reduce the age of erection failure and lengthen sex life without medication! Especially since these shock waves are not painful and do not present risks: indeed, their action is only local and to date, no side effect has been identified.

A negative element all the same: the price. The prices for shock wave sessions are free, they are not covered by Health Insurance, which represents a significant expense, between 900 and 1500 €. But some men say they would have paid much more for such a result. Especially since erection drugs , even generic, end up being expensive.

With shock waves, the result is durable for at least a few years. It is likely that some maintenance sessions should be done from time to time, since the arteries continue to age. But it is not yet known how often.
