My Conversation With A Black Trump Supporter.

I wish I could tell you I convinced him.
I wish I could tell you I made this black college-educated Trump supporter see the failure of judgement it would be to vote for a racist-lying-bigot but I couldn’t. In his words ‘Hillary lies and is part of the Washington elite’.
It was shocking to me that this black Trump supporter has let Pat Robertson and ‘700 club’ claim Conservative Christianity translates to a vote for a bigoted-racist-lying-scammer. As far as he is concerned Hillary let Bill cheat.
There were claims that Obama is a dictator, has signed several executive orders and that Hillary Clinton will continue these policies. Even with numbers I couldn’t convince him Obama signed fewer executive orders than Bush and Bill (below).

My pleas that executive orders are a far cry from how dictators actually do things fell on deaf ears. I grew up under a few military dictatorships and I know what dictatorship looks like. The last 8 years in this country is far from being a dictatorship. He was not convinced. He dislikes Obama and he hates Hillary that much.
Sharing how bad leadership has left Nigeria with a currency that is N330=$1, having seen it at N1=$1 did not even warrant a response. Trump it will be come time to vote. Hillary would let the gays and the Mexicans take over our ‘culture’.
I invoked the ‘we have to avoid wrecking this country for our children (as I pointed to my son) as it takes decades to reverse the downward slide of a nation under bad leaders like Trump’. He loves my son but it did not make a dent in his support of Trump.
He has heard all this before.
I was the crazy person shouting in frustration. I couldn’t believe someone who grew up in 50’s and 60’s America is willing to wreck things to prove a point to ‘The Establishment’.
He’ll still be voting Trump. The problem is that, while the pain of the middle class is real and the economy has not worked for everyone, we are so comfortable in the US we don’t know what real suffering truly is. It might be time for things to get worse. There is a Yoruba saying ‘O la ti baje ko to da’ which translates into ‘it might have to get worse before it gets better’. That’s the only hope we’ll have if Trump wins.
Think pieces on Medium will not change the minds of Trump voters. They aren’t reading this. They’re watching Pat Robertson and wondering why the rest of us keep bashing them for their free will to vote for a lying bigot. God bless America.
