As a foodie and lover of food generally (particularly Nigerian and African cuisine), I’ve found that I’ve taken an interest in discovering new food brands. I enjoy cooking but it can be tiring and sometimes you just want to eat something different and not worry about the fuzz that comes with chopping, prepping, and cooking. I’ve found the following African-owned food brands super useful in times like these.

Most of the brands I’ll be sharing today have been chosen based on how easy it is to transact with them. Convenience and food safety are big factors for me when it comes to ordering anything online, particularly food. So here’s my list.

1. Bekes Kitchen is perfect for modern families and young professionals who may want to occasionally experience a variety of authentic African food without worrying about the stress that usually comes with it. With Bekes Kitchen, you can order soups like ayamase, egusi, fisherman’s soup, afang soup & more freshly cooked and delivered conveniently and safely to your door. They also recently launched a range of spice mixes if you prefer to cook your soups yourself.

2. Puff Puff Ministry: Like doughnuts but better. Puff puff is a treat but never ever did I think puff puff could come in different flavours. Puff Puff Ministry are redefining puff puff as we know it with their range of toppings… I’ll highly recommend the Cinnamon Sugar and Biscoff toppings

3. Gemini Foods: Definitely one of the best things that happened to me over lockdown. As a Nigerian living in the diaspora, getting the ingredients to cook your favorite local dish usually involves taking a trip to the other side of town, hopping on and off trains or buses, and worrying about parking, etc.

Well, Gemini Foods gets rid of all of that by bringing the local food market to you at home. You can order anything from tubers of yam, okra, plantain, palm wine, malt, ugwu, and so much more. On the days that I fancy cooking my favourite Nigerian food, ordering from Gemini Foods helps me break the barrier of having to worry about making that trip and I’m all here for the convenience and quick delivery.

4. Tola’s: I recently ordered from this brand and I was impressed with how efficient they were. They offer African snacks such as puff puff, chin chin, meat pies, fish pies, sausage rolls, and more.

5. Orishirishi: If you’re new to the world of African food and would like to try cooking some dishes at home, I’ll recommend you start here with this cookbook titled ‘The Orishirishi cookbook’ by Tola Akerele. In this cookbook, you’ll read about the origin of the dish, the ingredients you need, and how to cook it.

Are there any other African food brands out there that you’ll recommend? Share below!

Author’s Note: I was torn re: whether or not to share this here but product leaders eat so enjoy :)
