All of the above! Officers caught breaking the law should be subjected to the law, especially in light of the fact that a lot of misconduct could be classified as occurring “under the color of authority” i.e. using their position to engage in abuse and misconduct.
Termination is an obvious solution and again one that is to achieve due to due process and union defense. That is where a federal oversight agency would come in, assuring that once an officer is fire he is ineligible for rehire in law enforcement.
Punitive damages should come out of an officer’s pocket, thus reinforcing the punishment for the misconduct.
