Even if a state allows permitless carry, there are still several reasons why you may want to obtain a firearm license.

No Waiting Period

In most Florida counties, there is a minimum waiting period of 3–5 business days. With your license, you can go into any establishment, pick out your firearm, pass the background check and leave with your firearm. There are countless news stories of people who fall victim to crimes during this waiting period. Don’t wait.

State Reciprocity for Travel

One of the biggest reasons is Reciprocity. Some states have reciprocity agreements with other states that recognize each other’s gun permits. If an individual plans to travel to other states with their firearm, they may need a gun license to ensure their permit is recognized and valid in those states. If you live in a state with permitless carry, it may still be advisable to obtain a gun license if you plan to travel outside of your state with your firearm. This is because some states have different laws and regulations related to gun ownership and carry, and your permitless carry license from your home state may not be recognized or valid in other states. Obtaining a gun license can provide reciprocity and legal protections when traveling to other states with your firearm. Some states have reciprocity agreements with other states, which means they recognize each other’s gun permits. If you have a gun license from your home state, it may be recognized in other states with reciprocity agreements, allowing you to legally carry your firearm.

Protection

While permitless carry may allow an individual to legally carry a firearm in certain circumstances, it may not provide legal protections in all situations. A gun license may provide additional legal protections and rights in the event of a self-defense situation.

Education and Training

Obtaining a gun license typically involves education and training in firearm safety and proper use. Even if a state allows permitless carry, an individual may want to obtain a license to ensure they have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly handle their firearm.

Private Property Rights

Private property owners may choose to restrict firearms on their premises, even if a state allows permitless carry. A gun license may be required to carry a firearm on private property where the owner has posted a “no firearms allowed” sign.

Employment

Some employers may require employees to have a gun license in order to carry a firearm on the job.

These are general suggestions to consider and you should do what’s best for you. Nonetheless, it’s important to research specific laws and regulations. It’s also always best to consult with a qualified attorney or law enforcement official for greater guidance on specific laws and regulations related to gun ownership and carry in your state.
