“The Kitchen” is the directorial debut of Daniel Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares, both of whom are Oscar-winning actors. Set in a near-future dystopian London, the film explores the issue of affordable housing, taking it to an extreme level. It serves as a warning of what could happen if the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. The story revolves around Izi, a resident of the Kitchen, a futuristic housing project that has become its own distinct world. The Kitchen is a towering complex similar to Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City and is located on the outskirts of metropolitan London. It provides shelter for the city’s impoverished community but is frequently targeted by brutal police raids.
Izi works at a futuristic funeral service called Life After Life, where families who cannot afford traditional burials can choose to have their loved ones transformed into trees. Sensing that the government is taking over their community, Izi and his fellow residents have been preparing and saving up to escape the Kitchen. Izi is a loner with no true friends, but his plans become complicated when he meets Benji, a recently orphaned boy. The young boy becomes attached to Izi and joins him at the Life After Life facility and later in the Kitchen, where he forms connections with a group of young activists. Izi and Benji develop a strong bond, and Izi finds a sense of protection that makes him reconsider leaving the home he once wanted to escape. As the police raids intensify and the situation in the Kitchen worsens, the duo confront the impending conflict and violence together.
