You never know how many seedlings will make it…

Pepper plant from early 2023

As a gardener, it is always best to germinate more seeds than you think you would require.

My goal is to start a batch of random apple tree seedlings, from seed, to produce enough basic rootstocks for delicious fruit producing scions to attach to.

Three apple seedlings reaching for the sun

Five initial seeds were germinated, taken from the core of an apple from the grocery store. Unfortunately, two seedlings died quickly. It was an honest mistake, of myself over-estimating the seedling’s ability to handle hot temperatures. Both seedlings shrivelled to death within a few hours.

The three that did survive, however, grew quite well in a shady spot indoors, and have now graduated to the outside heat.

However, I surely cannot stop there! So there is a whole new batch of apple seeds in the refrigerator (roughly a dozen) in a Ziploc bag, undergoing artificial stratification!

From my experience, the seeds usually can be planted after 1–2 weeks in the refrigerator.

That is my write up for today! Enjoy your day all fellow gardeners!
