We Are One: ‘Travelling While Black’

As one door (temporarily) closes, another opens…

With film festivals across the world either cancelled or postponed, so emerged We Are One: A Global Film Festival. As the title suggests, We Are One is a festival transcending all borders, bringing together 21 of the most prestigious film festivals across the globe to showcase and celebrate the moving image in its varying forms and genres.

Running from Friday 29th May — Sunday 7th June, all content is free to stream on YouTube and there sure is a lot to choose from: feature films and shorts, television, web series, panel discussions and 360 VR (which we will come onto shortly). Yet the best thing to note is the sheer breadth of diversity, a true celebration of World Cinema. And at a time when we feel so closed off from other countries, it feels all the more important to be transported into different cultures and communities.

If you’re unsure of where to start then there are plenty of articles running their top 10 or must-see’s of the festival — but the film, or rather documentary, that I urge you to see is ‘Travelling While Black’.

Shot in 360 VR, I was drawn to this firstly through the format (having never experienced VR on my phone before); but the real importance lies in its subject matter. The film is inspired by the 2010 play ‘The Green Book’, which…
