Bad Design

In looking at Bucknell’s website, I found the following page:

This webpage is under the title ‘Make A Reservation’ on the myBucknell home page, and it is used to reserve rooms across campus. I use this page mainly to browse for room availability; as a student, I am constantly looking for open rooms to hold small meetings, work on homework, and (I admit it) a quiet place to nap for 20 minutes between classes. Being used this way, as most students on campus tend to use the page, there is a glaring problem.

As a student, the circled part of the webpage is the only part that interests me. When I am using this webpage, my goal is to quickly find an open room that suits my purposes but, as we can see in the screenshot, I can only scroll through a maximum of 3 rooms at a time. This makes the entire process of room-searching very frustrating and much slower than it could be. More than half of the page is taken up by a Filter section which is only used to search for specific dates, meaning that the relevant part of the page is shoved unceremoniously to the bottom of the page, greatly reducing its ease of use.

Specifically, I feel that this webpage goes against some of the elements listed in the ‘Learning to See’ article. One of my favorite parts of the article was the following: “You don’t need to know the different layers of web design to find out if a web site works or not. All you need to know if it’s good design is if it works for you.” Very simply put, this webpage does not work for me as a student. While it is aesthetically pleasing, the page does not meet the needs of students who are searching for open rooms, which should be one of its main priorities.
