Having just celebrated 20 years with Houston Community College, I can say that innovation has been vital to our continued capacity to meet the changing needs of our students. Whether it be through Curriculum Innovation Centers to support faculty, start-up monies for early adoption of digital texts and e-readers in the classroom, or more recent examples such as our Z-degree and coding academies — we are recognized as leaders in higher education innovation.

Our innovative spirit, however, is not confined to the obviously technological. Through partnerships with researchers like Sara Goldrick-Rab, we understand that all needs are learning needs for our students and we thus demonstrate that innovation is about much more than an embrace of trending technologies, but is rather about an openness to new ways of thinking — and acting — so as to bring about positive change in our communities. It is an honor to be part of the first WHI Innovation Fellows cohort. I look forward to the adventure.
