Do millennials actually exist?

Yes, I think they do exist as a demographic group of people born during the age of digital — the difference between them and us being that they grew up with different expectations from the very beginning of their adult life around how people “should” work, life goals, social behavours and so on.

I agree we want the same things they do. However, whilst we probably entered our working lives surrounded by business models such as those of Ford, Toyota, Japanese companies and so on, the millennials entered the workforce seeing models such as those of google (work when you want, 20% side projects, free food, etc.) from the outset.

Hence, I think whilst we had to go through the pain of working in organisations that used the older models (measured by input, cubicles, hierarchies based on sexism, length of service, etc.) and try our best within them until they changed, the millennials just expected things to be “like google” from day one.
