I swear that time after time I’ve heard about La Michoacana from people who live around me but I feel like I can never find the place that they’re talking about. Some good news is, though, I think I figured out why:

I Googled “La Michoacana” and ^^^ this happened.

I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is no, they’re not all the same franchise. In fact they’re not even the same type of businesses.Three of them are meat markets from the same franchise and three of them are ice cream spots that I think are independent businesses.

We took a visit to one of the ice cream spots in Baldwin Park. The one off of Ramona. It’s definitely a whole in the wall you have to be introduced to rather than something you can easily find just by searching it up on Google or Yelp.

When I was ordering it was pretty hard to decide between a chamoyada or a chamango. The difference is this: A chamoyada is strictly a scoop of thick mango ice cream showered in lemon juice and chamoy candy then topped with another layer of the exact same thing, all served in a cup lined with a layer of tamarindo and powdered chili.

I chose the chamoyada strictly because I’ve had countless chamangos at different places and wanted to try something a little new. It’s safe to say I made a pretty good choice because the chamoyada was seriously, really good. The mango ice cream tasted very much like the actual fruit and the lemon juice and chamoy just made it all that much better.

For those that don’t know, a chamango is basically a mango flavored shlush mixed in with chamoy, lemon juice, and cut up pieces of the actual mango fruit. (Also delicious).

La Michoacana is nice to have around because of the fact that it’s simple, and it’s in a location that might be just around your corner if you live anywhere near Baldwin Park High School. The only downside of La Michoacana on Ramona is that it’s just not really contemporary. The plaza and area it’s located in is just not really that nice, and the vibe it gives off is just not so welcoming.

However, if you really don’t care for all that and you’re just looking for something refreshing to enjoy on a hot summer day, stop by La Michoacana for a tasty, frozen treat that you’re sure to be pleased by.
