You know these things in life that you delay and delay but know you should do?

Building an email list is one of them.

I was delaying the idea of building my list even when I reached decent traffic to my website. First, making a list while blogging and running my social media accounts seemed impossible.

To build a list, you must first create a lead magnet — an eBook, checklist, or other free stuff (like the email course you came through) that solves a specific problem for your audience.

You give this gift to encourage readers to subscribe to your list, forcing you to think deeply about your audience’s desires and write a lot.

Only then can you start crafting the email series to warm up the relationship with your readers, which also requires much planning and creation work.

That seemed complicated and hard work. I felt overwhelmed even to start, but similarly to many other projects that seemed intimidating initially, it turned out that building a list is not such a big deal.

I immersed myself in the whole thing and wrote my email course and the following creator emails within two weeks. I then designed the landing page and formulated the copy, and viola — I have an email list!

Putting together the content for an email list is genuinely exciting. It’s a stronger sense of accomplishment than that of publishing any other contnet, because you put more though in it. It’s a funnel to deliver your core value and significantly help your readers.

My lead magnet is a free 5-day email course to help you find your ideal side hustle, covering my best tips and lessons I learned the hard way as a creator. If that interests you, sign up here.

Of course, there is also the testing phase, segmentation, and more exciting stuff to master, but the central part of building an email list was behind me. It felt wonderful.

So, I’m here to say it’s possible to build an email list or, at the very least, create the infrastructure of such a list.

Whether you started writing on Medium, Twitter, LinkedIn,or on your website, you must start building your email list at some point.

Not at the beginning, as you have yet to build an audience. But once you published enough content on your site or have a decent amount of followers on social media, it’s time to hone your messages and deliver emails to your audience.

So, you know it’s crucial to build an email list as soon as possible. But why is it so?

5 Critical reasons to build an email list

1. More traffic to your content — You can refer your email subscribers to a resource you’ve created to get more traction. This resource can be your blog posts, Medium stories, or any other content you produce.

2. Build a long-lasting relationship with your audience — On your main content, your audience will read what they need and go away. However, your newsletter allows you to keep them interested longer.

3. Your email list stays with you — whether your site gets hacked or your blog’s ranking gets smoked by recent Google updates, your email list remains with you. You still have it on the autoresponder platform or a CSV file.

4. Effectively promote products or services — When establishing trust with your subscribers via newsletter, you can start offering them your or other brand’s solutions. A solution can be a service, digital product, or physical product, which can help your audience and earn you money.

5. Email is private — Unlike social media feeds, where you communicate with your audience publicly, email is confidential. The subscriber reads your email as you sent it to them personally, even if you sent it in bulk using an autoresponder. You can even personalize your emails and start each email by the subscriber’s name.

So, if you have just started your online writing journey, be focused on structuring your blog correctly and creating enough content there or on Medium and your other socials.

However, start thinking about building your list as you go. An email list is how you make a fun base, a community that trusts you. This is the most effective way to grow online.
