After completing my PhD in quantum materials, I was certain that academia and the research environment were not for me. One of the main reasons was my impatience, being a driver at heart, I couldn't wait for years to reach a conclusion or "decision". Even then, the conservative nature of presenting findings within the "margin of errors" and accounting for "alternative explanations" left me yearning for a greater sense of achievement. Upon entering the corporate world, I discovered a different challenge. I observed a tendency towards quick decision-making especially when any "data" or "numbers" were involved despite the fact that data can also be easily manipulated or misinterpreted. Solely relying on data is prone to many biases resulting in inaccurate outcomes. And in various readings and conversations, I realized it is not specific to a certain team or company. This realization sparked my journey into learning and sharing more about the potential pitfalls of data-driven decision making and how to solve for them. I believe in finding a sweet spot between the two ends of the spectrum—being results-oriented, driven, and unafraid to make decisive choices, while also maintaining a critical mindset and applying scientific thinking to constantly evaluate and refine our decisions.
