In reading this article and then looking at the first handful of comments leads me to believe that my thought 3/4 of the way through this were correct: “Somethings works for some people somethings don’t.” Furthermore, “know where you are in your life.”
I too read the article “People Who Have “Too Many Interests” Are More Likely To Be Successful According To Research” which gives the concepts of polymaths — people who intersect more than one interest to forge a new lane of their own. I actually read that article first and found that both articles, that one and this one, pull at my heart strings.
I am a person of many different interests. Articles about polymaths gives me more confidence to be a person of many different interest or a bee ( as Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic describes). However, an article such as the one above reminds me to focus my energy to achieve greater and further results.
So if I want to follow my passion of green efficient cars, today I may read solely about green energy, focusing 100% of my attention there. Next week I may focus completely on cars. Next month I may find ways to combine the two after I have understood both throughly and individually, making their combination even stronger. Perhaps even forging new ways I may not have seen before.
There is a beauty to both approaches and each of us will need a different dosage. Maybe you need 2/3 focus and 1/3 wander. Maybe vice verse, or split right down the middle.
I believe the strongest key here is to find your balance. When you tilt too heavily to one side of the other, readjust as you see best fit and continue to be the mfn rockstar you were meant to be.
Cheers!
