Alone, on a path.

Sometimes I walk a path, a journey meant for one.

So I go alone and that’s fine, for a path is a good place for thought and contemplation, and finding the truer spirit of oneself, reflecting on what was, what is and what is to be

So now, it is I and the path.

Until ahead there is another I see

— a friend, and now I remember clearly how a path can also be a journey made for two

and there is a different sweetness in conversation than in contemplation, as I recall.

So Happily I invite him along, though I do like walking a path alone,

good company can be made to feel like home

Now, we two, together, walk the path

and we talk and laugh,

and we dream and are happy in the simplicity of our journey

And grateful a path can be made big enough for two.

And he is pleased and I am pleased, he for the invitation and I for the company.

For though the path is great for one, it surely is perfect for two.

Then further up the road we see another who at first is unfamiliar to us.

So of course we had intended to walk by without as little as a wave

And surely not an invitation to join. For indeed she can find her own way around

Just then, we couldn’t help but see

— that same eagerness in her eyes, as in we.

For she too is hungry for the path and for company.

Of course We don’t hesitate to invite her along as we know all too well that another eager soul makes for a more enjoyable walk along the way

So we bid her come. “Join our walk” we say

Then my companion and I, we look each to the other, then to the path

Which is now barely wide enough for two to go abreast.

But still, we know what is best.

for a two may become a three

And as she comes, we look on in amazement as we see the path begins to widen. So what at first glance was meant for two to go abreast is now big enough three

We, two, have become three, and are all pleased.

And how fitting it all seems, “could there be a grand design at work!”

for now the laughter has increased

and the joy of the path has grown

and we forget that we were before, each alone.

“What miracle there is in a path!” We say

Delighted, whether there is one, or two or three

We can go it alone, “ But how sweet there is in company!”

And I would venture to say if there were another and yet another still

The path would grow to include all it will

Alas, when you here the call,

Go eagerly,

Go alone

Go as two

Go as three

Go as a grand multitude

But go you must and now if you would!
