Nicely written article. I was trying to pen one myself one of these days. To add to your point, this current immigrant phobia is actually distracting from the main points that many legal immigrants face when immigrating to the US. Many of them are students and H1B workers and US benefited a lot from them. Now it is US turn to give them green cards and citizenships in finite time. Yet there are huge green card backlogs and massive problems in the legal immigration system. This basically deters the illegals also to join the legal queue. Such issues were not there when say Norwegians immigrated en masse to US. And as a group, US is benefitting massively not only from Asian immigrants but also from their home countries such as India, Vietnam, Phillipines and the likes which are very close allies to present day US. Whether hillary or trump would help them is something only they can tell clearly. But citizens needs to be go back to their core american roots and figure this out. Rather than being lazy, and pander to smaller instincts that has dominated this entire political campaign from day one. The discourse in 2008 was way better than this. And suddenly everyone ( rubio, trump etc) are not even thinking twice about being polite to immigrants under the garb of being too politically incorrect. And this from people who are all themselves either immigrants or first generation kids of one — obama, trump, cruz, rubio, jindal and a host of other folks. Since when is USA — a nation built by and for immigrants — turn into a nation for the selfish desires of just one particular ethnic group ?
