7 Similarities Between an Entrepreneur and a New Parent
We often hear that starting a new company is like having a baby. I started thinking about how the journey of an entrepreneur and a new parent is strikingly so similar.
1. The unknown
Both the journeys of an entrepreneur and a new parent are so much different than what you imagined, and nothing anyone tells you could possibly prepare you. You don’t know what lies ahead of you, and you are stepping into the unknown. Each phase has a new learning and a challenge.
You have to get your hands dirty. You do not have the luxury of having an army of people to get you through the day. Especially, if you prefer doing everything yourself.
3. Late nights
Forget sleep. That is a thing of the past. Your baby or your startup need you 24X7. Late night calls will keep you on your feet all night long.
4. Innovation along the way
The soul of every start up or a relationship is constant innovation. You need to constantly come up new and better ideas to make your product better, retain customers etc.. With kids, you need to come up with new ideas to teach things, keep them engaged or simply get them to eat their meal.
5. Your relationship with your partner makes all the difference
When you have a partner who can support you through this journey, it gives you extra strength to do more and makes you stronger. It makes you a better parent and a better entrepreneur.
6. Stay Calm
Things will rarely go as planned.
On your most important day, your kid gets sick or your product launch fails due to unforeseen issues. So, what can you do? Nothing. Learn to let go and surrender yourself to the universe’s master plan.
7. You always talk about it.. till the time you annoy everyone around you :)
Entrepreneurs and new parents talk about their startup/baby all the time. An entrepreneur talks about how the startup is innovative, and shares its culture, ideas, projects etc… And a new parent talks about how their baby smiles, walks, poops… everything.
Both of these give us a lot of pride and happiness, and we want to share it with the world.
At the core of both these journeys, I believe that we truly enjoy it because these experiences give us a sense of purpose and identity. It brings us closer to our inner self. It will teach you about yourself more than you can imagine. Ofcourse, there are a lot of high and low points in this journey. But it is one of the most rewarding experiences. They are both fun, and will change how you look at the world!
