I actually like Westenberg’s writings for the most part but could not agree more with you in relation to the general principle. So much self-help writing is obscenely superficial, especially if considered in the context of it ostensibly wanting to, you know, help.
You’re spot on re attention spans too. We’re obsessed with instant fixes and quick reads, but what ever happened to actually taking time out to experience something fully?
I’m struggling to build an audience for a blog that I genuinely believe is exciting and unique, simply because reading one of my posts requires sitting down and actually engaging for 10 minutes, being fully present to appreciate whatever cultural thingamijig I happen to be writing about. It’s very distressing to see how we continue to reward lack of substance and snub anything that requires actual reflection and challenging one’s own ideas.
