The most important addition to GitHub: http://choosealicense.com/

One small step to reducing headaches for the world would be for GitHub, Inc. to make using and clearly publishing a license a requirement to create a repo on github. It’s kind of silly — especially the way github encourages everyone to fork left and right — to allow people to post code that’s just (C) Copyright, because you really shouldn’t be forking (in a public space!) something that’s copyrighted. That’s almost the anti-copyright.

Plus, more education. GitHub relies on both the legions of small projects by individuals, as well as the funding and attention from the companies that consume software. Those companies only want to consume legally safe software. So ensuring that everyone who submits code to github is a tiny bit better educated would seem a smart move on their part.
