I think based on all of your definitions of “titles” that a “UX Designer” never should have actually existed. That type of a person doesn’t exist. Rather I feel like what you are defining as a “product designer”, “product manager” and the other people all still fit under the UX design umbrella that should be a team of people.
The whole point of UX Design is just to be more focused on the user of products or things. It’s more of a mindset focused on empathy. I still see a huge problem in most companies that the strategic thinking and planning doesn’t involve anyone that is thinking from a UX design perspective and many products and companies suffer because of it.
I feel like nothing is actually changing, instead we are just coming up with new titles and names to call various roles. Who cares what we call them. Why do we constantly feel the need to get focused on titles anyways?
I’m beginning to think that we, as designers, must have an identity crisis. Where we must think that by changing our titles, that people will finally appreciate us and understand the value that we bring. The reality is, the title isn’t the solution to that problem.
The way you described a “product designer” is what I feel a part of UX design is. There shouldn’t be ONE person that is doing ALL of the various aspects of UX design. If they are, then they probably aren’t that great at ANY of the various things anyways.
