Our Future
Part 5 of 5
Our son is collecting new words each day. This is an ideal opportunity for him to learn the German language so that he can have more choices and opportunities for his future. He may find that, given who his parents are, he is at his core an American. We are. Or he may find himself at home in Germany.
Awaiting him is free daycare, a free education through college and universal healthcare. Or so we think!
We’ll be sharing our thoughts and experiences and comparisons here. We hope that being abroad — leaving our bubble — will offer us new insights on politics, travel, Europe, Trump, family, LGBTQ life, Democracy and America.
We don’t have to look far back in history at all to see how governance by fear plays out. We’ll be sending some of the many reminders we are sure to find in Germany.
We know there are millions — even a majority of Americans — who are rational, loving people and who will be fighting for a more progressive America. We stand with you and and we we will fight with you to resist.
Our fear for the future of America and our friends is overwhelmed by the encouragement and love we’ve received from them, even by those who worry we’re making the wrong choice to go. Our love and support for our friends and family and our country is returned.
We’re leaving the temperate California winter for a dark and cold Berlin. We don’t expect this to be easy, but change never is. We know that every day will get a little warmer and a little brighter.
