Wegovy 8: I’m hating on my body.

This is the eighth in a continuing series about my experience with the weight-loss drug Wegovy, which is similar to Ozempic.

I’ve been on Wegovy for almost seven weeks now, had two major binges, and lost 3 pounds. So I think we can safely say my Wegovy journey is off to a slow start. I am surprised at how okay I am with this — not thrilled but okay — and that is only because I’ve learned from a few decades of life experience that if the start is slow, the run will be long.

I’ve also learned that when situations begin with an explosion of adreleiane-fueled activity — and I’m talking to you, Every Ex-Boyfriend — they usually crash and burn in a maelstrom of fire. Rollercoasters are fun in amusement parks but destructive on a weight loss journey.

I’ve been on the weight rollercoaster hard for the past five years and it has wreaked havoc on my poor body, the aging being the worst part.

All my adult life, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed hearing people exclaim with disbelief when I share my age, me being the grateful recipient of a young appearance (think Gwen Stefani). Recently, I’ve noticed that the effects of the past five years of binging and dieting — all while smoking cigarettes on and off — have shown up on my body in the form of extra pounds, lost skin elasticity, and jowls around my chin. I hate all of it.

The truth is that compulsive eating is extremely hard on the body and yet somehow I’ve expected it to not show on mine. I feel a deep sense of shame for what I’ve done to myself — and also an understanding that it’s not entirely my fault. I believe compulsive eating is a medical disorder that compels one to eat against their own will … and I definitely have a bad case of it.

I will take advantage of all of the available anti-aging tools (e.g., firming creams, injectables, etc.) to correct the damage but mostly I will practice self-compassion. I didn’t ask for this illness, I would not wish it on anybody, and I’ll do everything I can to recover from it, a day at a time.

Make sure to follow me to get notified when I’ve posted a new entry about my Wegovy journey.
